Effects of Bicomponent Additives on Thermal Decomposition of $Al_2$TiO$_5$
ABSTRACT
In order to fabricate thermally stabilized Al2TiO5 ceramics equimolar $alpha$-Al2O3 and TiO2 were mixed with bicomponent additives of 2, 5 and 10 mol% of equimolar MgO/ZrO2, SiO2/ZrO2 and MgO/SiO2 mixture and pressed before sintering at 150$0^{circ}C$ for 2h. Sintered bodies were heat-treated at 115$0^{circ}C$ for 24h. X-ray diffractometer was used for the phase analysis and measurement of lattice parameters. MgO/SiO2 doped Al2TiO5 ceramics was the most effective in suppression of thermal decomposition which seemed to a combined effect of moderating of structural distortion due to substitution of Al3+ by Mg2+ and the reaction products of its precipitated oxide Al2O3 and SiO2
