Grain Boundary Migration Induced by Alloying of PbTiO$_3$ in BaTiO$_3$ Ceramics |

ABSTRACT |
When PbTiO3 particles were scattered on a polished surface of sintered BaTiO3 and annealed at 125$0^{circ}C$ cchemically induced grain boundary migration of BaTiO3 grains occurred near the scattered PbTiO3 particles In some BaTiO3 grain surfaces chemically induced recrystallization was also observed. During the annealing the scattered PbTiO3 particles changed to a (Ba0.6Pb0.4)TiO3 solid solution by diffusion of Ba from the sint-ered BaTiO3. The coherency strain energy of a coherent (Ba0.8Pb0.2)TiO3 layer on BaTiO3 was calculated to be between 1.94 and 3.11 [MJ/m3] depending on crystallographic orientation. The experimental results and calculation showed that the chemically induced grain boundary migration could be induced in BaTiO3 with low elastic constants when the amount of solute alloying was high enough |
