Preparation and Properties of Mullite Bonded Alumina Castable
ABSTRACT
In the preparation of a high alumina castable by the vibration casting method. the addition of microsilica (3.0wt%) as a deflocculant reduced water contents and enhanced flow value of castable. An additional addition of alumina cement (3.0wt%) led to an coagulation effect. Alumina fine particles (7.5wt%) were added to form mullite phase in matrix during heat treatment. Alumina cement used as binder induced liquid phase of silica at low temperature and the liquid phase of silica transformed into the mullite phase by the reaction with alumina fine particles. The activation energy for transforming mullite phase was 19.87kcal/mol. Compressive strength and modulus of rupture of the alumina castable were 900-1000kg/cm2 and 200-300kg/cm2 respectively. The resistance against corrosion of slag (15.71%) was improved comparing with conventional alumina castable
